Climate in Ireland

Ireland enjoys a mild, temperate maritime climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream. Understanding the weather will help students prepare for their year abroad and pack appropriately.

Climate in Ireland

Overview

Ireland's climate is characterized by mild temperatures year-round, frequent rainfall, and changeable weather. The famous "four seasons in one day" saying reflects how quickly conditions can change. However, extreme temperatures are rare - summers are pleasantly cool and winters are mild compared to continental Europe.

The Four Seasons

Spring (March - May)

Spring brings longer days and the countryside comes alive with wildflowers. Temperatures gradually warm from 8°C to 12°C. April can be unpredictable with a mix of sunshine and showers. By May, the days are notably longer and gardens are in full bloom.

Summer (June - August)

Irish summers are mild and pleasant, with average temperatures of 15-20°C. Daylight extends until 10-11pm in June, perfect for outdoor activities. July and August are the warmest months, though temperatures rarely exceed 25°C. Rain showers can occur but are usually brief.

Autumn (September - November)

Autumn showcases Ireland's beautiful colours as trees change. September often offers lovely weather, while October and November become cooler and wetter. Temperatures range from 10-14°C. The school year begins in September when weather is still relatively mild.

Winter (December - February)

Irish winters are mild thanks to the Gulf Stream. Temperatures rarely drop below 4°C, and snow is uncommon, especially on the coast. December has the shortest days, with sunset around 4pm. Christmas markets and cozy pubs make winter a special time in Ireland.

Rainfall in Ireland

Yes, it rains in Ireland - but it's rarely heavy or prolonged. The west coast receives more rainfall than the east. Dublin, where many boarding schools are located, is actually one of the driest areas. Light, misty rain (called "soft rain") is common and contributes to Ireland's famously green landscape.

What to Pack

Students should pack for layered dressing, as weather can change quickly. Essential items include:

  • A good waterproof jacket with hood - essential year-round
  • Layers: jumpers, hoodies, and light jackets that can be added or removed
  • Comfortable waterproof shoes or boots for walking
  • An umbrella (compact ones are practical for school bags)

Average Temperatures by Season

Spring (March - May): 8-12°C
Summer (June - August): 15-20°C
Autumn (September - November): 10-14°C
Winter (December - February): 4-8°C
